Let’s make this Holiness thing easy, and its burden very light.
Frankly speaking, no PERFORMER can please God. He requests only faith from us to please Him. So, NO ONE can be righteous and receive God’s nature by effort or by performance. It is GIVEN by GRACE and not EARNED.
Righteousness is the VERY nature of God; no man can work to earn it; it is given to us by grace on Christ’s merit ALONE.
However, a nature that is not nurtured to grow and cultivated unto maturity becomes useless, depreciates, and dies overtime. Therefore a Christian, the very being given the nature of Christ; the Fullness of the Godhead bodily, it is your responsibility to Nurture the Nature of God that you have received by grace through Christ Jesus.
This is what it simply means to be Holy; it is called the Holiness walk. it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” 1Peter 1:6
In other words, God is saying, remain righteous, and maintain my nature in you. You are already Holy, therefore, BEHAVE IT.
1 Peter 2:9-10
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a HOLY NATION, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy. (NKJV)
Therefore, the work and walk of righteousness; which is holiness, is not a matter to please God; faith in Christ alone is what pleases him, but it’s essence is to remaining the temple where God can dwell; a call to to sustaining and maintaining the presence of God in and around us always.
Notice that I said remaining and not becoming, because we have already become the temple of the living God on the premise of grace obtained by faith through Christ.
… For ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; … 2 Corinthians 6:16
So the issue of holiness is:
- Not becoming a dwelling place for God, but remaining a dwelling place.
- Not obtaining grace for supernatural living, but cultivating the innumerable measure of grace we have received in Christ so that it won’t be in vain.
- Not fighting for victory in our daily experience, but sustaining the presence of God for constant victory.
- Not encountering divine visitation occasionally, but experiencing unbroken divine presence.
- Not obeying rules and regulations to be holy, but maintaining your status of Holiness obtained in Christ.
The truth is, there cannot be total victory, if your life cannot create room for God to work and walk. I do not see godly success if you cannot harbour and retain the presence of God. What makes the difference is whether God is present in your life.
Therefore, you have an obligation to ensure your lifestyle is consistent with YOUR IDENTITY; for you are HOLY by your default positioning in Christ. Maintaining your status is simply expressing your faith in Christ’s finished work at Calvary, and manifesting your intrinsic nature to the world.
Apostle James put it this way. “But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” James 2:18
That is to say, you are a brand new person, live a brand new life. You are made clean and thoroughly washed; maintain your status.
Holiness is a deliberate work and a committed walk of dignity to see God. If indeed you understood the import and weight of God’s glorious imputed righteousness, and that, without conscious efforts to maintain its indelible reality in your life, you cannot see God [ His manifested force of power and dominion over sin and Satan ], then you will make every effort to fulfil your side of the deal.
In practical sense, you have been handed a finish-beyond-taste and furnished-to-teeth apartment, therefore, necessity of responsible is laid on you to care, maintain, and keep it to make it habitable and hygienic. If you leave it unkempt and stinking, it does not only dilapidate, it will chase away all friends and foes from your abode; you will NOT SEE anybody; not to mention God.
Do not be deceived, without holiness – works of righteousness – you cannot see God; that is, you cannot really Experience and Enjoy the grace of God; His Divine Power and Unmerited Favour.
Finally and Truly, Holiness is not what is needed to please God; faith is, rather it is the only condition to see God, [the power and the victory of the Cross] and it is indispensable for daily and total victory in every area of life; victory over failures, victory over the enemy, victory over delays and setbacks, and bringing victory to the lives of men.
