How to be Spiritually Minded

Is it just me or have you also noticed that keeping your head and heart in the right place is real work? It takes a deliberate effort to maintain a godly perspective in a negative world. I’m not just talking about having a positive attitude; I mean being spiritually minded.

Yet, being spiritually minded is a matter of life and death. It is a non-negotiable requirement for living the eternal life inherent in us.

Let us not forget that our Mind is a composition of the Thought, Emotion, and Will. So, being spiritual minded is simply allowing the influence of the Holy Spirit to permeate, saturate, and regulate the activities of this composition

The real spiritual mind is a SOUND mind! “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of A SOUND MIND.” (II Tim. 1:7); It is the surrendered mind. It is the yielded mind.

In other words, a Spiritual Mind is SOUND Thought-Life, it is SOUND Emotional-Life, and it is a SOUND Willed-Life.

I don’t have a set of rule for you on this matter, but I just want to share what works for me, having being guarded by the Holy Spirit over the years.

  1. Protect your Thoughts

Your thought is a major component of your mind. In fact, it is the stronghold of your life. Whatever controls your thoughts invariably controls your life. Every virtue, and every vice flows from this realm. So it is very important you protect what influences your thought.

You must always take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5. Thoughts have creative power, it turns imagination into reality. So you need to be careful about what goes in and out of it.

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23

Do not expose your thought to corrupt and evil influences; through media, associations, and entertainments, rather dispose your thought to the word of God.

This is a divine recommendation:

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things. Philippians 4:8

 

  1. Regulate your Emotions and Feeling

This will be quite easy if your thought is in check. Most times our emotions and feelings are basically the reflection of our thoughts. One thing I have realised over the years is that, the emotion can take instructions and adjust itself to our dictates.

Many times, we may run wild with our feeling, and grow hot with our emotions, but what is important is knowing how to be temperate when necessary. This is called Self-Control.

Now every athlete who [goes into training and] competes in the games is disciplined and exercises self-control in all things. They do it to win a crown that withers, but we [do it to receive] an imperishable [crown that cannot wither] 1 Corinthians 9:25.

We should not allow our emotions to control our actions and reactions, our feelings are often deceptive, we need to cultivate a renewed mind through the daily application of God’s Word.

 

  1. Submit your Will in Obedience God’s Will

Submitting to do God’s will, and admitting that His purpose is always greater than ours aligns us with God spiritually.

You need to train yourself to always submit to God’s will at every point of conflict. This affords us spiritual strength and fortitude from God.

…nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. Luke 12:42

Moreover, the only obligation the life of grace requires is Obedience. What made you righteous as a believer was because you obeyed the gospel, and all you will need to maintain this status of righteousness, in and with God, is continual obedience.

In conclusion, I say again, a Spiritual Mind is a SOUND Thought-Life, a SOUND Emotional-Life, and a SOUND Willed-Life. Ensure you are sound in these 3 constituents of your mind, and you will be properly set up to operate Spiritual Intelligence.
